Question

Problem 12 Room air at 23°C is heated by a 2000 W space heater with a surface filament temperature of 800 K. The room, at steady state, looses the power to the outside, which is at 7°C. Find the rate(s) of entropy generation and specify where it is made. Set up control volumes around the heater, the space between heater and the room, and the wall between the inside and outside.

Problem Wall with Strip Heater The air inside a chamber is measured to be 50C and used to convectively heat a wall (h 20 w/m2 K). The wall (thermal conductivity of 4 W/m K) is 200 mm thick and has a uniform heat generation of 1000 W/m2. To prevent any heat generated within the wall from being lost to the outside of the chamber a very thin electrical strip heater is placed on the outer wall to provide a uniform...

A convection space heater sold at Bass Pro Shop advertises 9000 BTU/hr of heating power. The heater works by forcing 40 ft3/min of ambient air past the heating coils, then emitting the heated air to the room, where it mixes with the cold air in the room. Part A) You decide to buy this space heater for your screened porch, and begin using it on a night where the temperature is 54°F and the barometric pressure is 100 kPa. If...

Problem 3 A home in a Midwestern city is being heated with a heat pump in a winter day where the outside temperature is 5 C. Due to poor insulation, the home loses 800 KW of heat to the outside surroundings.
