Answer #1

Hi,

Variance2) in statistics is a measurement of the spread between numbers in a data set. That is, it measures how far each number in the set is from the mean and therefore from every other number in the set.

variance at probably the most simple level to describe it is a measure of variability that includes every score in the distribution of data.

So, here it is very obvious that the IQ scores of students in my statistics class will have less variation than the IQ scores of a simple random sample taken from the general population.

And, this is because, in my statistics class, we can say that we have a cluster of group of people who have achieved almost same knowledge in their life and tehy are studying same subject currently and have studied the same subject probably in their past lives as well, so this means that in a statistics class, almost all the students have almost same level of IQ and hence mean will be very high and ofcourse, variance of such class would be very very low,

Whereas, in a normal general population, we will have some vendors, some workers, some labours, some intellectuals like professors, etc, so here these al set of people will obviously have different IQ levels and hence their variance will be very high and they will have more variation.

I hope i answered your question very well, comment, if you need more help, and Please do LIKE, Thanks.

For randomly selected adults, IQ scores are normally distributed with a standard deviation of 15. For a simple random sample of 25 randomly selected college students, their IQ scores have a standard deviation of 18. Use a 5% level of significance; test the claim that the IQ scores of college students are less consistent (higher standard deviation) compare to the IQ scores of the general population.

Suppose that a very large population of students has taken this same test on the internet. Their mean score was 7 and their population standard deviation was 4. Assume that there are 49 students in our statistics class and that these students can be thought of as a random sample from the same large population of students who took the statistics quiz online. Suppose that the mean quiz score for our class is 9. Now imagine that we draw many...
