Answer #1

12) The function of peptide bond :-

(b) To join the amino group of one amino acid to the carboxyl group of another amino acid.

The peptide bond is responsible for the primary structure of protein in which the amino acids are joined by the peptide bonds. The peptide bond is a type of covalent bond between the carboxyl group of one amino acid and the amino group of another amino acid.

The other options are incorrect since :-

• The secondary structure of protein is held in shape by hydrogen bonds, which form between the carbonyl O of one amino acid and the amino H of another. So option (a) is incorrect.

• Peptide bond is not responsible for tertiary structure of protein. Four types of bonding are responsible for tertiary structure of protein and they are :- hydrogen bonding, ionic bridges, disulfide bonds, and hydrophobic intermolecular interactions. So option (c) is incorrect.

• The phosphate group attached to the 5' carbon of the sugar on one nucleotide forms a phosphodiester bond with the hydroxyl group attached to the 3′ carbon of the sugar on the next nucleotide. So option (d) is also incorrect.

Since all other options are incorrect except (b).

Thus the correct answer is (b) To join the amino group of one amino acid to the carboxyl group of another amino acid.
