Some bacteria pump the drug out of the cell after it has entered, using translocases, often called Efflux pumps, that expel drugs.

  • Efflux pumps eliminates any harmful toxic substances present inside the cell. It regulate the internal environment of cell by expelling toxic substances such as antimicrobial agents, metabolites and quorum sensing signal molecules. Drug Efflux is the key mechanisms for drug resistance.

Mycoplasmas do not have a cell wall containing peptidoglycan, thus they are resistant to penicillin since the drug interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis. This is an example of intrinsic resistance.

Exposure to specific antibiotics is a selective force that helps maintain the resistance gene in a population of bacteria.
