A roller coaster designer wants to know what the speed of the cars will be at each point on the ride so that structural supports can be constructed accordingly. The heights of the ride are given such that the initial height is h = 135m , point A is 40.5m , point B is 60.8m , point C is 79.7m , and point D is 0 m (each height given above the ground level). (Figure 1)

Answer #2

1) K.E at A = mg(135 - 40.5) = 94.5mg

or,0.5 mv2 = 94.5mg

or, v at A = 43.04 m/s

2) K.E at B = mg(135 - 60.8) = 74.2mg

or,0.5 mv2 = 74.2mg

or, v at B = 38.14 m/s

3) K.E at C = mg(135 - 79.7) = 55.3mg

or, 0.5 mv2 = 55.3mg

or, v at C = 32.92 m/s

4) K.E at D = mg(135 - 0) = 135mg

or, 0.5 mv2 = 135mg

or, v at D = 51.44 m/s

Dr. C. #2. (PHYS 121 engineering design exercise) You have seen why cars inherently accelerate quicker in a straight line and have better fuel mileage than an SUV with the same engine; it's because of air drag and the smaller frontal area and better drag coefficient of the car. Now let's think about why cars handle (take turns, change lanes and make other quick maneuvers) better than an SUV. We'l1 simplify our analysis by considering a vehicle of mass M...
