Genotype Phenotype
IAIA or IAi type A blood
IBIB or IBi type B blood
IAIB type AB blood
ii type O blood

A) A case came before People's Court. Mr. and Mrs. Smith (names have been changed to protect the innocent!) had a baby girl named Samantha. Their next-door neighbor, Mr. Jones, filed a suit to gain custody of Samantha, claiming the baby was his. Blood tests were conducted with the following results:

Samantha: type O

Mr. Smith: type AB

Mrs. Smith: type B

Mr. Jones: type A

You are the judge. How would you rule? Explain your answer completely.

B) How would you rule if the blood types had come out as follows? Explain your answer completely.

Samantha: type AB
Mr. Smith: type AB

Mrs. Smith: type B

Mr. Jones: type A

Answer #1

Answer A

Let us assume two situations

Situation 1. Mr and Mrs Smith are the parents of Samantha. The genotypes of the two will be IAIB and IBIB (or IBi), respectively.

Let us use IBi notation for Mrs. Smith since Samantha has ii genotye which is actually asked to varify in the question. The offsprings will be like the following Punnet square.

Punnet square1
IAIB IAi
IBIB IBi

Situation 2. Instead Mr Jones and Mrs Smith are the parents of Samantha. The genotypes of the two will be IAiand IBi, respectively. The offsprings will be like the following Punnet square.

Punnet square 2
IAIB IAi
IBi

ii

It is now clear from the Punnet square 2 that Samantha could be the child of Mr. Jones and Mrs. Smith.

Thus, the case would be in favor of Mr. Jones and his claim for Samantha's custody is right.

In simple Mendelian inheritance alleles display a simple dominant/recessive relationship. There are many exceptions to Mendelian laws of inheritance. Most genes have more than two allelic forms and do not exhibit simple Mendelian inheritance. The human ABO antigens are an example of a multiple allelic trait. There are three ABO blood group antigens, IA, IB and i. The i allele is recessive to both IA and IB. A person who is homozygous ii has type O blood and does not...

In this scenario, the mother has blood type A and is heterozygous (IAi). The father has blood type B and is also heterozygous (IBi). First, please complete the Punnett square below. Add one allele into each parental allele box, and a complete genotype (such as IAIB, IBi or ii) into each offspring box. Remember that dominant alleles should always be written before recessive alleles in a genotype (IBi, never iIB). Please review my powerpoint! BLOOD TYPE (A and B alleles...

    6. Sickle cell anemia (disease) is described as an autosomal recessive condition (individuals must have two copies of the recessive allele to display “sickle cell disease”). However, sickle cell trait (the heterozygous condition) has a unique phenotype. a. How would you classify/describe sickle cell trait at the organismal level (complete, incomplete, or co-dominance)? Explain your reasoning. b. How would you classify/describe sickle cell trait at the molecular level (complete, incomplete, or co-dominance)? Explain your reasoning.
