Role of digital forensics in investigation.

Source of digital evidence: Digital forensics have various sources that can be used to present as the evidence against the suspect.

Internet History -> Internet history of people tend to give a large digital footprint online, this shows the website they visited and might give a hint of type of activity they are doing. For Example, profiles on online dating website may give indication of the adultry in divorce cases.

Text Message -> This is not so common, but sometimes suspect send messages that can ease the investigation.

Social Media -> Their social media activity can give a reflection of their identity and can be useful in investigation.

Emails -> Emails are very powerful and can be used against the suspect in the court. Messages may be analyzed to prove criminal behavior, such as tax fraud or drug dealing.

Using GPS for locating suspect and determining his/her activity.

Stages of Digital Forensics:

Acquisition: It is the process of gathering evidence against the criminal to be used in court. They can be from any of the sources mentioned above.

Analysis: Analysis is the process of linking and identifying the digital forensics evidences and making the case stronger.

Reporting: Last step is reporting, basically to report the end results of the above two processes.
