Hi there!
I understand from the question that a cylindrical pressure vessel is fixed at an end and subjected to force F from other end so that the cylinder gets comprssed by x length.
The last question C can be easily obtained by equating the strain caused by the external force F to the axial strain due to drop in temperature which is the compatibility equation.
Please let me know if you have any further doubts.

Q2. Figure Q2 shows a cylindrical pressure vessel made by welding semi-spherical caps to a cylindrical body. The cylindrical part has inner diameter Di = 1.8 m and the wall thickness, t, is uniform and equal to 6 mm. The internal pressure is p = 1.5 MPa. d) What is the value of a force F, applied in the direction of the axis of the cylinder which would make the direct stress in longitudinal direction, in the cylinder wall, one...
4.A thin-walled cylindrical column carries a weightless arch and is loaded as shown in Figure 4. The column has an internal diameter of 250 mm with a thickness of 2 mm Given: E-200 GPa and 0.3 The answer to each part of the question is to be used for subsequent parts (a)Determine the stresses on the outer surface of the cylinder at points A and B due to (8 marks) (b) Determine the minimum internal pressure p required if the...
