What does the biological species concept use as the primary criterion for determining species boundaries?

Remember: The biological species concept defines a species as members of populations that actually or potentially interbreed in nature, not according to similarity of appearance.

Question 7 options:

Answer #1

according to the biological species concept the members of a species can interbreed to produce offsprings that can reproduce, so the gene flow has to be present in between the individuals in a species.

niche differences between the individuals decrease the chance of mating with each other and reproductive isolation will lead to speciation.

geographic isolation leads to reproductive isolation which in turn leads to speciation.

so the answer is c) gene flow.

Under the biological species concept, which of the following statements is/are true? a) Gene flow can occur between species. b) Species are independent evolutionary lineages. c) Isolating mechanisms prevent gene flow between species. d) Geographic isolation and differences in the timing of mating are two mechanisms that allow populations to genetically diverge. e) Donkeys and horses are not species.

The biological species concept (BSC) defines species based on reproductive isolation; distinct species fail to produce fertile hybrids. If the BSC is the “gold standard” for understanding what species are, why are most species still recognized based on phenotypic differences (i.e. the morphological species concept)? a. The mating experiments necessary to confirm reproductive isolation are too time-consuming to carry out on all but a small fraction of presumed species pairs. b. Reproductive isolation is not a meaningful concept in the...

The biological species concept defines a species as a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring. This means that all members of these populations can contribute to a common gene pool. These populations belong to the same species. Genes are transferred between these populations through both direct and indirect gene flow. Biologists used genetic techniques to look for gene flow in 12 wild populations of mice. The populations (designated A...

    1. A population of monkeys on an island in the Amazon river is preyed upon by margays (a type of small cat).  Within this population the largest monkeys are too big for the margays to catch and the smallest monkeys are too agile for the margays to catch. Thus the mid-size monkeys have the lowest fitness. Over time this population could potentially split into two populations and two separate species of large and small monkeys. What type of speciation would occur...

What an Executive Summary Is An executive summary is a specific type of document that does two things: it summarizes a research article, and it offers recommendations as to how information from the article can be used. Some long reports can contain an executive summary section, as indicated in the Pearson handbook. Write a 2 pahe Executive Summary In business contexts, an executive summary is always written for a specific purpose: to explain the information in the article to a...
