The biological species concept (BSC) defines species based on reproductive isolation; distinct species fail to produce fertile hybrids. If the BSC is the “gold standard” for understanding what species are, why are most species still recognized based on phenotypic differences (i.e. the morphological species concept)?

a. The mating experiments necessary to confirm reproductive isolation are too time-consuming to carry out on all but a small fraction of presumed species pairs.

b. Reproductive isolation is not a meaningful concept in the large number of asexually-reproducing microbes.

c. Reproductive isolation cannot be tested in fossil forms.

d. All of the above are limitations of the biological species concept, but not for recognizing species based on morphology.

Answer #1

The biological species concept which works on the reproductive isolation concept. In this mode, the two organism are considered in a species if they have the ability to interbreed together and produce the fertile offspring. But if they are not ablebto mate, then theybare not found in same species.

The reproductive isolation is a time consuming technique because we have to look for the mating period and then for their offspring nature.

The asexually reproducinv organism can not be categorised into species on the basis of biological species concept.

The reproductive isolation is not found in the nin living form. That's why it can not be tasted int the fossils.

That's why morphology is the best way, in fossil form and asexually mode of organism. It does not consume time until mating period. We can found the species in the basis of morphological trait.

That's why right answer is D.
