Cell division is the process by which a cell divides itself. There are two types of cell division - mitosis and meiosis.
Mitosis is called as equational division because the number of chromosomes in daughter cell and parental cell are equal to each other. It occurs in somatic cells of the body. It leads to normal growth and maintenance of the body. It is divided into four phases - prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. It does not leads to recombination and variation in the daughter cells.
Meiosis is called as reductional division because the number of chromosomes in daughter cell are half that of the parental cells. It occurs in germline cells of the body and give rise to give rise to gametes. It is divided into two stages of meiosis 1 and meiosis 2, both of which are further divided into prophase, metaphase anaphase and telophase.

Meiosis is composed of two chromosomal division called Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Each of the two divisions consists of Prophase, Prometaphase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase and each of these phases is designated I or II according to which division it is a part of. Be sure you know what happens in each phase in regard to the chromosomes, chromatids, spindles and the nuclear envelope. During which phase does synapsis occur and crossing over begin? And in which division, Meiosis I or Meiosis II...
