Yugo Yoreway was analyzing the chemical composition of cells he isolated from the mud in a pond and comparing it to the chemical composition of the mud. He noticed that the four most abundant elements in the cell were not the same as the four most abundant elements in the mud itself. Why? The cells were assimilating material from the water, not the mud itself, and the elements in the cell were proportional to the material in the water. The cells were living in the mud, but had actually formed in a different area that was composed of different elements.
