The columns built by the ancient Greeks and Romans to support temples and other structures are tapered. They are thicker at the bottom than at the top.  Is there an engineering reason for doing this?

pressure is inversely proportional to area.

larger ares of the base helps to withstand the enormously high pressure to support the monument's weight
