The purpose of project management and the SDLC is to increase successful software implementation. The article titled “IT Project Failure Rates: Facts and Reasons” makes it clear that a lot of projects still fail.

I would like to talk about the migration of the data from one database to another at a telecom company. The company wanted to test and make changes to the system to make sure that the correct data is populated in all the fields. They wanted to develop features so the development was following the SDLC. This project was a failure because the project management concepts like defect tracking, coordination between the IT and business teams, and process documentation were not properly followed.

The main lapses occurred during the designing, building, and the testing phase. The process documentation during the design phase was neglected. The coordination between the IT and business teams was a disaster and they totally failed to understand the business and functional requirements. The bugs in the build were not tracked properly and an incomplete project was delivered to the client and it received very bad reviews from the client making it a huge failure for the company.
