In Ainsworth's Strange Situation Test, the nature of attachment
determines the child's response to the care giver:
1. Secure attachment - The child is distressed when the caregiver
leaves. The child avoids strangers when alone, but is friendly when
the caregiver is present. When the mother returns after a period of
absence, the child is happy and positive.
2. Insecure resistant attachment - The child shows intense distress
when the caregiver leaves. The child displays fear in the presence
of strangers. When reunited with the caregiver, the child
approaches the caregiver but will resist contact.
3. Insecure avoidant attachment - The child shows no sign of
distress when the the caregiver leaves. The child is okay with the
stranger. When the caregiver returns after a period of absence, the
child shows little interest.
