Answer #1

A protease is an enzyme that is involved in the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. So, treatment with a protease results in the production of 2 or more small peptides from a larger protein.

To determine whether a given compound works as a protease inhibitor, we can perform enzymatic assay in the presence and absence of the drug.

If the drug does inhibit the protease function, we can not observe small peptides (We should run a PAGE gel for observation). If the drug does not inhibit the protease function, smaller peptide can be seen in SDS PAGE gel.
