Projectile motion

A volleyball is served overhand at an angle of 45 degrees from the horizontal at a speed of 9.8 m/s. Show that the ball will just barely make it over the net and just about 2 meters on the other side of the net (a very tough serve to receive). Use projectile motion and free-fall concepts to calculate.

Hereโ€™s some HINTS:

1) Find the Vx and Vy components of the volleyballโ€™s intial motion

2) Find the time it takes the ball to (horizontally) reach the net.

3) See how high the ball will be vertically at that time (donโ€™t forget about the 1.7 m of

initial height). Use ๐‘†๐‘ฆ = ๐‘‰๐‘–๐‘ฆ โˆ— ๐‘ก + ) โˆ— ๐‘Ž โˆ— ๐‘ก* *

4) Find out the total time the ball will be in projectile motion. See where the ball will be in Sx at that time.

5) Knowing the Vy and Vx at the end of projectile motion, how long will it take for the ball to reach the ground (1.7 below)?

6) TofindthetimedetermineVyfwith๐‘‰๐‘ฆ๐‘“* =๐‘‰๐‘ฆ๐‘–* +2โˆ—๐‘Žโˆ—๐‘†๐‘ฆ

7) Once you know Vyf, use this formula to find the time: ๐‘‰๐‘“๐‘ฆ = ๐‘‰๐‘ฆ๐‘– + ๐‘Ž โˆ— ๐‘ก

8) Use this time to find out how much further the ball will travel horizontally (using Vx,

which is constant).

9) In sum: Show the ball just barely makes it over the net and where the ball will land

on the other side of the court
