What would a Utilitarianism say to someone who broke a promise?
Utilitarianism is a concept of moral theories which explains that the actions are right or wrong depends upon the effects of situations. The results of actions can be either good or bad depending upon the consequences of action in life. There is fine distinction or differentiation line between individual actions and types of actions which are exhibited by a person in life. The example includes the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by John Wikes Booth. The effects of actions can be situations like killing or stealing. The morality in life can be increased by increasing the pleasure and happiness in different situations. There are moral codes which are based on customs, traditions and orders. The example of Utilitarianism are Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. They both were theorists and social reformers. There are various economic, political and social polity. If a person breaks a promise rather than keeping a promise, then it is a deed of a slightly better well-being. The concept of act- utilitarianism implies that promise should be broken as explained by Ross. There are wrong answers to moral act utilitarianism. Judge should punish the criminal and prevent the innocent person from getting punished. It is explained in the details described by Rawl. If a doctor is able to transplant organs from a healthy person to save life of five other persons then it is may be seen as an act of Utilitarianism. There are situations of morally permitted lying, promise-breaking, cheating and forgery can be explained under the circumstances of act utilitarianism which cannot be used for trusting other people in life. Peter Singer explained that donor should give donations till reaching a point when donation provides harm to the donor and does not provide good to the recipient. There is no scope of providing special preferences to specific people in life. There are ten commandments which focus on the act of not killing, stealing and prevention of forbidden acts in the society. Immanuel Kant gave an example that if A is trying to murder B, and if A asks you that where B is then A should inform, even it means the death of B. " A" should not lie even if it means that lying can prevent the murder of B. The other example is rule utilitarianism which explains that the moral rights things are according to a rule in life whereas the morally bad things depend upon the breakage of the morally bad rules in life. One should not break the moral rules in life which have a code of moral conduct.
