Answer #1

Physiological dead space is equal to anatomical dead space.

Alveolar ventilation is the amount of gas which reaches the alveoli during a breath. Dead space is the portion of each tidal volume which is not involved in gas exchange. There are two different ways to define dead space-- anatomic and physiologic. In a normal healthy individual the anatomic and physiologic dead space are equal as all the alveoli are functional and well perfused in the normal lung. However, in a variety of disease states, the physiologic dead space may be 10 times the volume of the anatomic dead space.
