Answer #1

Entner doudroff pathway.

Antibiotics are the drugs used against bacteria. Antibiotics should target only the bacteria , they should not attack human body. So a metabolic pathway should be selected which is present only in the bacterial cell and not in human cell. Glycolysis and Pentose phosphate pathway are present in bacteria and human where as Entner doudroff pathway is present only in bacteria. All the three pathways are Glucose metabolising pathways.

Entner doudroff pathway is present in gram negative bacteria and certain gram positive bacteria. The pathway involve the metabolism of glucose to pyruvate by the series of action of enzymes. keto-3-deoxygluconate-6-phosphate (KDPG) aldolase is the key enzyme in the pathway. The pathway use certain unique enzymes and is present only in the bacteria. So this is the best pathway that can be targeted by antibiotics. All the enzymes involved in this pathways can be targeted with out producing any side effects in human.

Metabolic Pathway Engineering Problem Set 5 Engineering a Fermentation System: Fermentation of plant matter to produce ethanol for fuel is one potential method for reducing the use of fossil fuels and thus the CO2 emissions that lead to global warming. Many microorganisms can break down cellulose then ferment the glucose to ethanol. However, many potential cellulose sources, including agricultural residues and switchgrass, also contain substantial amounts of arabinose, which is not as easily fermented. Escherichia coli is capable of fermenting...

Use of Modern Molecular Techniques to Determine the Synthetic Pathway of a Novel Amino Acid. Most of the biosynthetic pathways described in our book were determined before the development of recombinant DNA technology and genomics, so the techniques were quite different from those that researchers would use today. Through this question, you will explore an example of the use of modern molecular techniques to investigate the pathway of synthesis of a novel amino acid, (2S)-4- amino-2-hydroxybutyrate (AHBA). AHBA is a...
