Discussion Question 1:
Compare and Contrast IPv4 and IPv6. Find examples of companies who are currently using IPv6. What are some of the benefits of using IPv6 over IPv4 and vise versa.
IP stands for Internet Protocol and are set of internationally agreed rules to transmit datagrams through the internet. IPv4 is the fourth version of the internet protocol and was first used in the original ARPANET in 1983. It is the most popular method to route internet traffic even today. IPv4 has been surpassed by IPv6 but not in usage yet.
One of the main differences between the protocols are that IPv4 uses 32-bit format addresses while IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses. This is done so because IPv6 was designed to tackle the huge growth in Internet users. IPv4 can support up to around 4 billion devices (2^32 unique addresses). So a 128-bit IPv6 address format can cover most of the Earth’s population.
IPv4 is written in decimal (base 10) number system as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be a number from 0 to 255. e.g. 192.168.230.1 is a valid IPv4 address.
IPv6 is written in hexadecimal (base 16) number system and they are separated by colons. e.g. 3ffe:1900:4545:3:200:f8ff:fe21:67cf is a valid IPv6 adress.
Companies that are deploying IPv6:
NTT
Verizon Wireless
AT&T
T Mobile
Sprint
Reliance Jio
Advantages of IPv6 over IPv4:
IPv6 Addresses can be processed faster
IPv6 supports more addresses
IPv6 has built in security features (Security features were later added in IPv4 as an option)
DHCP is no longer required
True Quality of Service
Auto Configuration
Advantages of IPv4 over IPv6:
There are not many advantages of using IPv4.
It is easy to remember
Requires less memory space
Existing infrastructure supports IPv4 mostly
Legacy Support
