main causes of heritable variation: are mutation and recombination. because these two factors make permanent changes in the DNA sturucture which is passed on to the offspring by meiosis and gamets

Mutation: changes in DNA due to sense mutation including, addition, deletion, frameshift or single nucleotide change.

Recombination: involves exchange of DNA segments between chromosomes, this can also occur due to crossing over.
