Answer:

  • In this case, we have to different terms.
  • Dominance refers to the interaction between two alleles in a single gene where one allele mask the expression of the other allele.
  • The gene that mask the expression of other allele is called dominant and the allele that is being masked is called recessive.
  • In gene interaction, the situation is more complex because we have the interaction between two genes.
  • Both terms differentiate between each other in the number of genes acting.
  • In dominance, there is only one gene while in gene interaction there are more than one. In gene interaction, the products of a determined gene will affect the expression of a second gene.
  • One example is epistasis, where the expression of an epistatic gene will mask the expression of a second gene.
  • A real example of gene interaction is the coat color in mice where there are two alleles, A codes for the agouti color and a codes for a solid colored fur.
  • At the same time, there is a second gene which codes for a protein that allows the deposition of color.
  • If the gene has a recessive genotype, the protein wont be produced and the gene A wont be expressed, producing an albino mice.

Assume that tail length in mice is a quantitative trait involving two genes, each with 2 alleles. One allele at each gene contributes to long tails, the other allele at each gene does not (small tails). The genes are located on different autosomes. Mice with 0 contributing alleles have tails that are 4 cm in length; mice with tails with 4 contributing alleles are 12 cm in length. 1.) The height of a type of bean plants is determined by five unlinked genes called A, B, C, D, and E. The tallest plants are 220 cm. Estimate how many centimeters each allele contributes to the height difference. C.) The genotypes are known for two bean plants. Plant 1 is genotype AABbccDdEE....

Is there GxE (gene-by-environment interaction) for the effects of sex in humans? Recall that GxE occurs where the effect of a given environmental change depends on an individual's genotype (for example, where a "better" environment is not equally better for all genotypes), or where the effect of a given genetic change depends on an individual's environment (for example, where a "taller" genotype adds a quantitatively different increment to the individual's expected height, depending on its environmental circumstances). In fact, these...
