1. The last thirty years of the 1800’s (post Civil War) brought many changes to our country, including transportation, media, technology, and societal (due to immigration and emancipation). How did each of these changes affect the evolution of advertising in this country? Furthermore, compare and contrast these same broad categories of changes that have occurred in our country in the last thirty years (1980-2010). How has advertising evolved during this current time period? Be sure to provide specific examples to support your answers.
The advertising has evolved and the ways how the brands &
people reach out to the masses have to been changed. During the
1980's the mode of advertising were newspapers and other print
media. Also, wall paintings and billboards were the initial means
of advertising for the people. With changing times, the advertising
methods evolved in print with magazines, newspapers, pamphlets,
etc. coming in picture. The radio and television also evolved and
people used to heavily invest in that segment. Slowly, with the
rise of cinema, branding through cinema houses also started taking
up the pace in the field of advertising. At the beginning of the
21st century, print, radio, television, and outdoor media
advertising were the most common advertising channels adopted by
the brands. However, the technological boom explored and gave out
multiple advertising options. With the advent of phones and
computers, advertising took shape on various websites and just
messaging on mobile phones; from calls, messages, and website
advertising, the brands have now reached advertising on social
media platforms and other technologically advanced ways.
Hence, it shows that advertising has shaped and developed a lot in
the previous two to three decades.
