IIIB. Oxidation reaction with Fehlings solution-(Cu2 /Cu Aldehydes can be further oxidized to carboxylic acids by mild oxidizing agents such as Cu ions. Ketones do not undergo this reaction. One such mild oxidizing reagent is Fehlings solution, a solution of copper sulfate (CuSO4) mixed with an alkaline solution of sodium-potassium tartrate. In the process Cu?+ is reduced to Cu+ which precipitates as red Cu20. This type of reaction forms the basis for the testing of urine for the presence of glucose, a condition resulting from such disorders as diabetes mellitus. (Before performing this part of the experiment carefully wash the test tubes with soap solution). Test: To each of five numbered clean test tubes add 5 ml of Fehlings solution. Then add 20 drops of one of the substances or solutions indicated in the table. Thoroughly mix and heat all the tubes in a hot water bath for 10 minutes Compare and record the observed colours.
