Question
Started dissolving mixture with diethyl ether. And shook 3M HCL in sep funnel. Collected.
Now:
1) You added NaOH to organic phase collected in problem 2 to extract another compound,
Which compound was extracted in NaOH solution? Justify with chemical equation
2) to the aqueous phase you added HCL solution until it’s ph was less than 7. What happens if it’s ph is 7 or above?
3) when you acidified the solution by adding HCL, a white precipitate was produced. What’s it made of? Justify with equation

Answer #1

On treating with Hcl forms salt with amine which then goes into aqueous phase and Benzoic acid and Napthalene goes into organic layer. Then add NaOh to organic, benzoic acid forms salt and goes down onto aqueous phase and Napthalene goes into organic layer, on dried off the ether gives pure Napthalene.

Then add Hcl to aqurous layer untill it reaches pH<7 to regenerate the Benzoic acid and then add Na2SO4 to absorb moisture remains in the compound and finally filteration gives pure Benzoic acid.

Add NaOH to amine Salt to regenerate the amine and then add Na2SO4 to absorb moisture and filter off gives pure amine.

Organic Chemistry Lab question In the experiment we did acid-base extractions to find impurities. The impurity was either benzoic acid (acid) or 4-chloroaniline (base) So in this experiment we did Acid-Base extraction with an unknown compound. So we had an unknown of 0.150 grams and mixed it with 20 mL of diethyl ether. We placed this in a separatory funnel and added 2mL of 1.0 NaOH solution to the separatory funnel and placed the stopper over the top of the...

Need help on providing reactions that describe the acid-base extraction and neutralization processes used in this experiment. Provide a statement of solubility of each starting material and product. The experiment to be performed this week involves liquid-liquid extraction using a separatory funnel. Read chapter 15 in Zubrick to familiarize yourself with the use of the glassware for extraction and washing. Acid/Base Extraction Liquid-liquid extraction is a technique that can be used to physically separate two substances that have varying solubility...

Acid/Base Extraction Liquid-liquid extraction is a technique that can be used to physically separate two substancesthat have varying solubility properties. Typically an aqueous solution can be extracted with anorganic solvent to isolate a compound or vice-versa. The specialized piece of glassware that isemployed for these types of separations is called a separatory funnel. In this experiment a mixture of benzoic acid and naphthalene will be purified using liquid-liquidextraction, more specifically an acid-base extraction. Since both compounds are soluble inethyl acetate (an...

using the procedures, we used dichloromethane as the unknown mixture and i was able to extract benzoic acid for an acid, 5-chloro-2-methoxyanaline for a base compound and biphenyl for neutral compound. i don't know if that answers the missing part but if it didn't could you be specific please? thank you! 2. Exercise 2 Separation of a Mixture Based on Acid-Base Properties One purpose of this exercise is to learn how to use a separatory funnel to extract a single component away from other compounds in solution. To do so, we will apply the principles of solubility and acid-base behavior you’re seeing in class. One of the compounds is neutral in the acid-base sense. It has no ability to either donate or accept a proton from an aqueous solution, and will remain...

Construct a flow chart describing the seperation of the mixture and the isolation of each compound in this experiment. (Lab steps/procedures includes for reference) 4. Construct a flow chart describing the separation of the mixture and the isolation of each compound in this experiment. A commonly used method of separating a mixture of organic compounds is known as liquid-liquid extraction. Most reactions of organic compounds require extraction at some stage of product purification. In this experiment you will use extraction...

    3) The hydrogen atom in HCl is electrophilic whereas the hydrogen atoms in sodium borohydride are nucleophilic. Offer a plausible rationale for this difference in reactivity. PROCEDURES 1. Add 2.00 g of 3-dimethylaminopropiophenone hydrochloride, 10 mL of distilled water and a magnetic stir bar to a 100 ml beaker, and stir to dissolve. This is the reaction beaker. 2. Add (with stirring) sufficient 10% NaOH (about 5-6 mL) to bring the solution to pH > 10. The free base will...
