Answer #1

The membranes are classified into 4 types based on their pore size

1. Microfiltration membrane(MF)

2. Ultrafiltration membrane(UF)

3. Nanofiltration membrane(NF)

4. Reverse osmosis membrane(RO)

Microfiltration:- the pore size ranges from 0.1 micron to 1 micron which is measured by porometers. Since the cake forme on the membrane acts as a dynamic membrane, all the tiny molecules with low molecular weight are rejected by this membrane.

Ultrafiltration:- the pore size varies between 0.01 micron to 0.1 micron which is measured by promoters. Rejects the solute particles same as microfiltration membrane.

Nanofiltration:- the pore diameter varies between 1 nm to 10 nm. It is not effectively measured by prometers or porometer. This membrane is good in rejecting divalent ions like Ca2+, Mg2+ etc., With an efficiency of 70 to 95%.

Reverse osmosis:- no pore size diameter can be identified by using even scanning electron microscopy for this membrane. This membrane is good in rejecting monovalent ions like Na+, Li+, K+ etc., With an efficiency of 90 to 99%.
