For designing a drug to inhibit the formation of a product, the first piece of information the biochemist should need is the rate limiting step. Allosteric enzymes are metabolic regulators, which have multiple active sites located on different protein subunits. In metabolic pathway, there will be the rate limiting enzyme step, which is the target of physiological regulation. So protein subunits would be the best target for a new drug.
