A web farm is a particular collection of servers in a particular location that allows all their functions to be centrally controlled. The advantages and disadvantages of server farms are as follows:
ADVANTAGES
1. Balancing the load of traffic becomes an easier task to control
and manage.
2. The SIngle point of failures can be avoided since the faulty
servers can be replaced quickly.
3. Slow servers can be removed by faster servers while routing the
traffic away from nonresponsive servers.
DISADVANTAGES
1. The control structure is centralized and therefore all the
sessions need to be stirred in a centralized database.
2. Request from a particular user cannot always be routed to the
same server.
3. Application logs would be distributed amongst the web servers
and therefore becomes harder to collect and reference.
