Americans with Disability Act (ADA) was passed in the year 1990. This law was passed with an objective of safeguarding the rights of individuals with any kind of disabilities and protect them from any kind of discrimination. This law tries to facilitate the lives of people with disability and give them same rights and opportunities as normal people, in the society.
This law lays guidelines about the ways in which employers must make accommodation for the people with disability at the workplace. Employers are obliged to make reasonable accommodation for the employees with disabilities and provide them favorable conditions to work. There are primarily 5 Titles in this law:
A qualified individual with disability is one who has the skills, knowledge as well as experience to handle a job role. For any individual to be protected under ADA, he must be able to perform the essential functions of any role. This must be possible with or without the provision of reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodation provided by employer for an employee in Health Information Management, may include the following:
The job of Health Information Management may require regular work with documentation and medical records. Employees with vision defect may would not be able to cope with the work. Similarly for some jobs, typing on computer can be an essential skill. In such scenario, the employer can deny job to a candidate who is incapable of typing. This will not be considered as discrimination.
