You synthesize a synthetic mRNA, (AAG)n. If you were to translate this ribonucleotide molecule in a system with all possible aminoacyl-tRNAs, what products would you expect to see? Why would you see only two products with a synthetic mRNA, (GUS)n? What are they?

Answer #1

AAG codes for the amino acid Lysine. So the end product of translation with (AAG)n will polylysine polypeptide.

This is because there are only 20 amino acids and 64 codons in the genetic code.

How many ATP or ATP equivalents would it take to translate the coding region of an mRNA that encoded 277 many amino acids? (Include the energy used to set up the ribosome, charge the tRNAs using an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, choose the correct tRNA, translocate the ribosome, and tear down the ribosome complex at termination. This answer will not include the energy required to synthesize the mRNA in the first place, only the energy to translate 1 polypeptide. I'm not sure...

QUESTION 32 The genetic code was deciphered in part by experiments in which synthetic polynucleotides were used as mRNAs to direct protein synthesis in cell-free extracts (in-vitro system). In the test tube, artificial conditions were used that allowed ribosomes to start protein synthesis anywhere on an RNA molecule, without the need of a translation start codon, as required in a living cell. What type(s) of polypeptides would you expect to be synthesized if the polynucleotide 5'- CAUCAUCAUCAUCAUCAUC...-3' were used as...

    1) Choose one molecule from the set and create an 8-step synthesis scheme using the chosen molecule as your starting material. You need to write the complete set of reagents and draw the product expected from each step. Reagents typically used together are considered one step, eg. 1) LAH 2) H.O should be considered as one step Your 8 steps must include at least one reaction from each of the chapters, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acid derivatives, alcohols. You can...

Yes. yes..of course you are correct: organic condensations dont get you wet. They get you a new product. Silly me Aldol condensation...

Imagine you are exploring the Australian Outback and stumble across two perfectly identical fields separated by a natural barrier. Field 1 is covered by large, grass-eating kangaroos and the other is covered by small, grass-eating wallabies.  Each field has an identical amount of grass as a resource.  There are only enough grass resources on field one to support 100 kangaroos, and only enough grass resources on field two to support 150 wallabies (wallabies are smaller so need less grass).   You find out...
