The criteria used to determine if an injury or illness is classified as a “restricted work” case is when a physician or other licensed health care provider recommended that the employee not perform one or more of the routine functions of his or her job, or not work the full work day that he or she would otherwise have been scheduled to work. (29 CFR 1904.7 (b)(4)(i)(B))

An example of this might be an individual who has had hip replacement surgery and can only work 4 hours a day for 6 weeks before returning to work his normal 8 hour days.
