Businesses collect and store data on us all of the time. They use this data in marketing, providing products and services and conducting business with us. Have you ever thought about all the places where your information might be stored digitally? Think about the myriads of databases out there that might be capturing and storing your information as you conduct transactions over the internet or even locally where you visit your doctor, dentist or banker. Virtually all organizations and companies store data electronically these days. Therefore, it is a good idea to at least be aware of where your information is, what information is being stored about you and how the information is being used and/or shared.

What are some of the places your data is stored that you might not readily think about?

Do you think your privacy is protected?

Do you have a specific practice around this?

Answer #1

In this modern age where every aspect of life revolves around data collection and storage, analysis of data and recommendations made based on the analysis, it is very difficult to have our privacy protected. The system that we are a part of monitors and records everything, where privacy is a thing of the past. Modern communication equipment leave a digital trail which can be followed by individuals like hackers or governments or big corporations.

Some places where data is stored or communicated through that we may not readily think about are like Email, Web browsing, File storage and archiving, Social Networking, Location data, Wireless services, Search engines, Skype some among many.

With emails, even though it is possible to protect the information that is being communicated but the metadata, the data about the person sending the email and receiver, are not exactly secure as these are needed by internet routing system and they are readily available to people looking for the same.

Many commercial companies track our online behavior to provide suggestions/recommendations. So it is high time that we take care of what we are browsing and how much data the browsers are accessing and storing while web browsing.

Social networking sites work against us even if we put up privacy settings, in such way as we can not control the information that is posted by our connections on social media.

Need to be careful with services that require location information, as this data is private for one reason and not everyone should access to it as it can be misused.

When it comes Wireless services, it is best never to use open WiFi in public places and not to keep bluetooth switched on all the time, as these both can help people to access our devices and get access to data.

Based on the above provided information, it is safe to assume that privacy is not protected and it is our responsibility to make sure that our data is not being accessed by people without our prior affirmation.

Some of the ways to protect our privacy is to begin by not sharing location information with every application that is used, to use an email service that is secure even if it is charged to us, to use browser which doesn't store our browsing history or data, to switch off bluetooth until and unless it is being used, to not connect to open WiFi in public places.
