Management Information System is a collection of systems, hardware, procedures and people that all work together to process, store, and produce information that is useful to any organization. Decision makers need information to make effective decisions.

A dependable MIS is critical to any organisation’s success and sustainability.

Some of the critical objectives which make a dependable MIS important are:

  • Organisational decision making today is completely dependent on the speed and quality of Information processing. A robust and well structured MIS makes the information processing fast and accurate. As a result the speed and accuracy of decision making becomes effective and efficient as required
  • Accuracy of information process is further dependent on the quality of data that is gathered and the manner in which it is securely stored and maintained. This requires a dependable MIS infrastructure
  • Due to complexities in businesses and a well connected global market place, economies today require MIS that has a very secure system to gather and store critical data and information. This is aided by a well designed and dependable MIS infrastructure
  • Businesses such as banks, insurance service providers, telecommunication companies, defense suppliers, healthcare providers, transportation companies deal with a lot of private customer data. MIS infrastructure’s robustness and dependency is critical to safe guarding and maintaining this type of data

Components of a MIS Insfrastructure:

  • Hardware: Servers, computers, data centers, switches, hubs and routers, and other equipment. All critical information like financial data, customer information, business related information etc. are stored at server locations. Organisations can choose to have the data stored on premise (e.g. local server) or over a cloud server (e.g. AWS which may be located at a secure place)
  • Software: Enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), productivity applications and more. This is the brain of the MIS. Applications are required to carry out data gathering, analysis and recommendation for business decisions. This is what drives processes and strategies aimed at achieving business or organizational goals.
  • Network: Network enablement, internet connectivity, firewall and security
  • Human Resources: such as network administrators (NA), developers, designers and end users with access to any IT appliance or service are also part of an IT infrastructure, specifically with the advent of user-centric IT service development.
