This week we are going to review navigating the ICD-10 manual. You will be given a scenario and a potential answer. You will provide feedback to whether the answer is correct or incorrect and provide your pathway to reach the correct answer. Then you will create your own scenario with a potential answer for the class to dissect and reason. Please answer the scenario based on which day you post during the week.

Scenario: A 12-year-old was seen today for ear pain. The physician documents labyrinthitis, bilateral. The coder assigned code H83.09 to the chart. Is this correct? Why or why not? Please provide the pathway you took to the correct answer. Now, provide your own scenario like the one above for the class to dissect

Answer #1

Scenario: A 12-year-old was seen today for ear pain. The physician documents labyrinthitis, bilateral. The coder assigned code H83.09 to the chart. Is this correct? Why or why not? Please provide the pathway you took to the correct answer. Now, provide your own scenario like the one above for the class to dissect

Condition documented : labyrinthitis, bilateral

Code assigned         : H83.09

Code description         : labyrinthitis, unspecified ear.

From the code description, it is clear that coder assigned an incorrect code. The 12 year-old is suffering from labyrinthitis, bilateral. Bilateral means both ear. So H83.03 is the correct code according to ICD-10 manual. Code description for H83.03 is ‘labyrinthitis, bilateral’ . So in ICD-10 , choose disease header. Under which search for labyrinthitis. And select the code which specifies the laterality (bilateral in this case.)

Senario :

A 60-year-old was seen today for dry and red eyes. The physician documents Acute atopic conjuctivitis, left eye. The coder assigned code H1011 to the chart. Is this correct? Why or why not? Please provide the pathway you took to the correct answer. Now, provide your own scenario like the one above for the class to dissect

Condition documented : Acute atopic conjuctivitis, left eye

Code assigned         : H10.11

Code description         : Acute atopic conjuctivitis, right eye

From the code description, it is clear that coder assigned an incorrect code. The 60 year-old is suffering from Acute atopic conjuctivitis, left eye. Here the laterality is left eye. So H10.12 is the correct code according to ICD-10 manual. So in ICD-10 manual, choose disease header. Under which search for conjunctivitis > atopic > acute > left . And select the code which specifies the laterality ( left in this case.)
