What Does a Sales Associate Do?

As the public face of the company the Sales Associate is responsible for dealing with any and all customer questions about the products and services the company offers. A Sales Associate is expected to be continuously updating their knowledge of the company products, services, and policies. Sales associates are hired or appointed to provide customer service. Workers falling under the job title of sales associate take responsibility for greeting customers, locating products, price-checking items, and organizing store shelves and displays.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Greeting customers, responding to questions, improving engagement with merchandise and providing outstanding customer service.
  • Operating cash registers, managing financial transactions, and balancing drawers.
  • Achieving established goals.
  • Directing customers to merchandise within the store.
  • Increasing in store sales.
  • Superior product knowledge.
  • Maintaining an orderly appearance throughout the sales floor.
  • Introducing promotions and opportunities to customers.
  • Cross-selling products to increase purchase amounts.

One example rather instance that I am sharing here to answer the given question:-

There was a time when a customer was unpleased with a product they purchased from our retail store and I was about to leave the store for the day, I had already worked an 8-hour shift and I was quite tired. When they came in, they completely caught me off guard and I wasn’t prepared or well equipped for the scenario due to my energy levels. I remember that I was attempting to communicate with the customer clearly but that they were unhappy with that still. I recall that I almost lost my temper and communicated poorly to the customer but instead of continuing the argument what I did is asked one of the other sales associates to help me because I clearly wasn’t able to resolve the problem. That alleviated me from the situation which I probably wasn’t in the best of positions to be confronted with in the first place. It was quick thinking but ultimately the customer was able to get what they needed and move forward.

In this case:-

  • The first and foremost thing is to put yourself into customer's shoe. In simpler words, understand or empathize with customer's perspective, opinion, or point of view. So, I recognized myself not fit for that moment to handle the situation.
  • What is lacking me behind is professional appearance due to my physical problems on that instant. So, I didn't allow it to affect on the business or customer's experience at our store.
  • I think as a Sales associate one needs to be very personable, approachable, friendly, selfless, and willing to take on new challenges. So, I thought of showing the sheer professionalism and handover the client to one of my co-workers.
  • In business, customer is always right. So, I may not always agree with them, but I need to remember to empathize with whatever scenario they felt unjustified.
  • Outcome- The customer had found no dispute in our service. The things which observed by the customers are as follows:-
    • They felt greeted at our store- As a retail business is mostly dependent on customers make sure that they feel valued as soon as they enter your premises.
    • They understood that we are aware of them and respect their appearance.
    • The transition period and process was so ethical that it didn't loose our time not our reputation.
