The movement of the ions and it's uptake into cell depends on many factors. The specific ions and it's movement is regulated through direct interaction between the concentration that is present externally of the ion and the rate of it's uptake. Whether the ion concentration is high or low, it's movement will depend on the concentration outside and inside. The ions have some charges and hence they are cationic or anionic in nature and when movement of ions take place, it's regulation depends on it's charge, whether it is positive or negative charge. When the ions are transported within the cytoplasm, in order for the movement to take place it requires assistance from other molecules or carriers localized in the plasma membrane. There are different ways ions are transported and especially in case of movement against concentration gradient, it requires molecules or energy for the transport
