Explain how class, ethnicity, and “race” intersect in language. Be thorough.
Class, ethnicity, and race are all markers of social stratification in society. They form the source and the basis of differences, hierarchy, and inequalities. However, each of the markers has different sets of qualifiers. Langauge also intersects in how people in society identify themselves with their class, ethnicity, and race. It can be a case of cultural and political. For example, a class of people may speak a 'higher' or stylized language to distinguish themselves from other classes such as the royal class would have a different set of language for addressing and conversing with people. Ethnicity is usually traced to an origin and its a marker of identity. In the case of ethnicity, the language of the group can be defined by the country of origin or their identification with an indigenous population. While for race, in order to assert their identity can have different style of langauge as their identity markers. For example, rap music is altogether a different style of langauge of the blacks.
