Definitions:

  1. Niche: An ecological niche is defined as all the biotic and abiotic interactions of an organism with its environment. The role and position of an organism are determined by how it survived-by finding food, shelter from predation, finding mates, etc. All these factors comprise the ecological niche of an organism/species.
  2. Fundamental niche: It can be defined as the whole set of conditions - abiotic and biotic that are suitable for an organism (population/species) to survive and reproduce.
  3. Realized niche: It is defined as the environment or conditions ultimately utilized by the organism after interactions such as competition and predation (factors that lead to the difference) with other species. A realized niche might be less than or equal to the fundamental niche of an organism ( key difference between realized and fundamental niche).
