In the story by John Updike A&P the author explores the character of 19 years individual Sammy who works at a grocery store as a cashier at the A&P. in the story Sammy tries to explore his heroism, but he later realized that it is not an easy thing to be a hero in this modern world. The author uses the character of Sammy in the story as evidence of significant changes in the story. Towards developing the evidence of substantial changes in the story, the author uses the theme of initiation to shape Sammy development from innocent individual with ignorance to a more experienced and knowledgeable individual. The essay focuses on how the author uses the character of Sammy in the story A&P as evidence of significant change or development in the story.
Sammy is the narrator of the story A&P and is a very opinionated, sarcastic and disaffected lad who has a healthy interest in ladies and also possess a keen observational sense as the author expresses in the story. Sammy in the story encountered various scenarios which helped in his development especially when he gained knowledge about himself and of adulthood, and he also learned that how difficult the world is to those individuals who cling on their romantic notions about the ways of life. Sammy in the story also lacked the maturity to live and accept the world injustices which led to his loss of everything except himself, and after his initiation to adulthood, it led to his development into an adult.

The author also uses Sammy's romantic quest as evidence of significant changes which the character encountered in the story. This is illustrated in the story when Sammy acts to save the "queen" and her two consorts from ogre Lengel which shows how Sammy wanted to be a hero in his romantic quest (Devi 21). The three Sirens also tempt Sammy in the story, and he also rejects his mentor, and this occurred before his initiation which showed that he had not yet developed into adulthood and to have enough knowledge on the best decision to undertake. His initiation came after he recognized and developed the futility of his quest and later returned to Lengel who told him the truth.
The evidence of significant change in the story is also illustrated by the author when Sammy quit his job because Lengel stopped the three girls who walk in the store being inappropriately dressed. This led to a significant development in Sammy life since Lengel gave Sammy a chance to retract his impulsive declaration of quitting the job, but he did not (Devi 17). This development is evidence that Sammy as an individual is ready and willing to sacrifice his job as a cashier in the grocery and also for personal gains for integrity. His stepping out from the job also proved and led to Sammy developing the knowledge on how hard and challenging the world would be after his loss of employment. Sammy also developed the sense that his rash actions of quitting the job for the girls to overhear him were aimlessly and that at the end he would be the one to suffer the consequence due to his antic desires for the girls. It is also evidenced that Sammy irrational decision to quit employment was a signal of his desired membership and a new desire to develop his new life.
It is also evidenced in the story that Updike used Sammy to express the developed desire that Sammy had for Queenie so that she should show him things which he longed to see and also to take him to places he had never visited. Updike also claims that the developed differences in social classes between Queenie and Sammy prompted Sammy to quit his job since he saw Queenie to be rich and him as poor thus, he wanted to engage in a relationship

with him accordingly, his defending of Queenie (Devi 24). It can also be explained that it is evidence that Sammy wanted to change from his previous fashion and even to break from the trappings of the society that's why he saw an opportunity when Queenie walk into the A&P, and he took the chance.
The development of Sammy character in the story by Updike illustrates how there were significant changes and development in Sammy way of life especially after meeting Queenie. The story also explains how various individuals in the society usually take multiple steps which to them seem ideal and typically lead to positive and negative developments. Sammy expresses his desire for Queenie by taking a step which Lengel viewed as inappropriate.

In the story, Sammy tries exploring his heroism, but he later realizes that it is not a cakewalk to be a hero in this modern world. The author uses Sammy as evidence of significant changes in the story. Towards developing substantial evidence to bring changes in the story, the author uses the initiation theme to shape Sammy's development from an innocent individual with ignorance to a more expert, experienced and knowledgeable individual. The essay emphasizes on how the author uses the character of Sammy in the story as evidence of significant development throughout the story.

Being the narrator of the story in A&P Sammy is a very opinionated, ironic and dissatisfied guy who has a keen interest in ladies and also possess a healthy observational sense as the author expresses in the story. Sammy in the story encountered various situations which helped in his overall development especially when he gained knowledge about himself and of adulthood, and he also learned that difficulty in the world is for those individuals who cling on their romantic notions about their ways of life. Also, Sammy did not have the maturity to live and accept the world injustices which led to his loss of everything except himself, and after his initiation into his adulthood, it led him developing into an adult. The author also uses Sammy's romantic quest as proof of quite important changes which the character came across in the story. This is depicted in the story when Sammy has to save the "queen" and her two consorts from ogre Lengel which shows how Sammy wanted to be a hero in his romantic quest (Devi 21). The three Sirens also lure Sammy in the story, and he also declines his mentor, and this happened before his initiation which showed that he had not yet developed into adulthood, to have enough knowledge on the right decision. His initiation came after he acknowledges and developed the vanity of his quest and later returned to Lengel who informed him the truth.

The proof of an important change in the story is also depicted by the author when Sammy quit his job because Lengel stopped the three girls in the store being inappropriately dressed. This led to an important development in Sammy's life since Lengel gave Sammy a chance to withdraw his impulsive decision of quitting the job, which he did not (Devi 17). This development displays that Sammy as an individual is ready and willfully sacrificing his job as a cashier in the grocery store and also for personal gains for his honor. His leaving the job also proved and led to Sammy developing the knowledge on how hard and difficult the world would be after losing employment. Sammy also developed the sense that his impulsively harsh actions of quitting the job for the girls to overhear him were aimlessly and that at the end he would be the one to suffer the consequence due to his antic desires for the girls. It is also showed that Sammy's irrational decision to quit employment was a signal a new desire to develop his new life.It is also clear in the story that Updike used Sammy to express the developed desire that Sammy had for Queenie so that she should show him things which he wanted to see and also to take him to places he had never visited. Updike also claims that the developed differences in social classes between Queenie and Sammy prompted Sammy to quit his job since he saw Queenie to be rich and him as poor thus, he wanted to engage in a relationship with him accordingly, his defending of Queenie (Devi 24). It can also be explained that it is evident that Sammy wanted to change from his previous trends and even to break from the shackles of the society that's why he saw an opportunity when Queenie walks into the A&P, and he took the chance.

The growth of Sammy's character in the story by Updike displays how there were critical changes and development in Sammy 's way of life especially after meeting Queenie. The story also explains how various individuals in society usually take certain steps which seems ideal and typically lead to positive and negative developments for them.
