. Imagine you want to determine the number of genes that influence the color pattern in snakes. You cross two inbred (i.e. homozygous for all genes) snakes with different color patterns, then intercross the F1s. At the point where you have produced 972 F2 offspring, you have one offspring that has a color pattern that is the same as each of the parents (offspring number 478 resembles the father, and offspring number 684 resembles the mother). How many genes influence skin color in the snake?

Answer #1

This is the case of polygenuc inheritance. In this case, there is found involvement of more than two genes.

There is found three types of offspring in F2:

* One offspring have both parents color

* 478 have father type color.

* 684 have mother's type color.

That's why there is found 3 phenotypes.

Number of genes = n

We know,

Number of phenotype = (2× number of genes)+1

3 = 2×n +1

3-1= 2×n

2/2 = n

n= 1

That's why in this case, one gene encodes the snake color pattern.

    A Better Way? As you can see, Punnett squares for phenotypes that involve several genes can get complicated. If you can recognize the patterns, you can make a mathematical model to figure out how common or rare a particular genotype or phenotype would be, depending on the number of genes involved. To do this, you begin by figuring out how many different combinations of alleles each Fparent could contribute to the F2 generation. When one gene-A-was involved, each parent could...

    Pigment of chicken feathers is regulated by two genes, the gene for feather pigment C, and a gene that inhibits pigment production, I. A mother chicken, who is homozygous recessive for gene c, and heterozygous for gene I, is crossed with a father chicken, who is heterozygous for the pigment gene, and heterozygous for gene I. • Inhibition is dominant to uninhibited, pigmented feathers are dominant to unpigmented feathers. • The inhibitor gene (I) will prevent expression of pigmented chicken...

Capital letters are dominant: L = long necked, I = short-necked, G = gray fur, g = brown fur, R = red eyes, r = pink eyes. True-breeding parentals of opposite phenotypes were bred to produce the F1 hybrids, then the F1 hybrids were test crossed to...

    On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values in the following table: Table 1. Counts of Pencil Bear fur style by genotype Phenotype Genotype Silky...
