A biomedical research company produces 42%42% of its insulin at a plant in Kansas City, and the remainder is produced at a plant in Jefferson City. Quality control has shown that 1.25%1.25% of the insulin produced at the plant in Kansas City is defective, while 1.05%1.05% of the insulin produced at the plant in Jefferson City is defective. What is the probability that a randomly chosen unit of insulin came from the plant in Jefferson City given that it is defective?

Answer #1

Given,

P(Kansas) = 0.42

So P(Jefferson) = 0.58

P(Defective | Kansas) = 0.0125

P(Defective | Jefferson) = 0.0105

Hence by Bayes' theorem:

P(Jefferson | Defective)

= 0.5370

Plant City operates a commercial plant nursery where it propagates plants for garden centers throughout the region. Plant City has $5.25 million in assets. Its yearly fixed costs are $668,500, and the variable costs for the potting soil, container, label, seedling, and labor for each gallon-sized plant total $1.20. Plant City's volume is currently 490,000 units. Competitors offer the same quality plants to garden centers for $3.70 each. Garden centers then mark them up to sell to the public for...

Problem 2. The Hit-and-Miss Manufacturing Company produces items that have a probability p of being defective. These items are produced in lots of 150. Past experience indicates that p for an entire lot is either 0.05 or 0.25. Furthermore, in 90 percent of the lots produced, p equals 0.05 (so p equals 0.25 in 10 percent of the lots). These items are then used in an assembly and ultimately their quality is determined before the final assembly leaves the plant....
