Every game company has specific requirements that need to be meet before they will hire you as a video game designer. Game Designers should have creativity, technical skills and passion to create cutting edge games.

If someone loves gaming and have a desire to learn programming, art and media skills, then video game designer is the suitable career path for him/her. Though most of the companies look for following skills in a video game designer:

  • Communication skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Critical skills
  • Storytelling skills
  • Visual design skills
  • Basic programming skills
  • Strategic thinking skills

Most video game designer jobs fall into three areas: Game Artist, Game Designer or Game Programmer.

Video game designer education requirements vary according to game design job areas. Education requirements for various disciplines are as:

Video Game Designer: A college degree or certificate in game design. Skills to look for in a video game designer education program include game theory, storytelling, game planning and strategy,content writing and creative thinking.

Video Game Programmer: Education requirement is a bachelor's degree in video game development, computer science, software engineering, game & simulation programming, or a similar area of study. Video game programmers should be good in the programming languages commonly used in video game design such as Java, C and C++.

Video Game Artist: Education requirements for this include a specialized 2 or 4 year game art degree. The ability to effectively use modern graphic design & animation software such as Adobe Flash, will also help as a video game artist.

Career path for various role is different. However gaming industry is booming day by day, so there is bright career ahead in Video game designing!!
