a→b (Wb=100 + Wa)

c→d (Wd=1000+ Wc)

Which process has the greater entropy change (AS)? Keep in mind that Wa, Wb, Wc and Wd represent the number of distinguishable arrangements of a, b, c and d, respectively.

Answer #1

Entropy is interpreted as the degree of disorder or randomness in the system. So more the randomness in the system more is the entropy.

a b

For this reaction , the number of distinguishable arrangements increase by 100 when a changes into b as Wb , the  number of distinguishable arrangements of b is 100 more than the number of distinguishable arrangements of a.

c d

For this reaction , the number of distinguishable arrangements increase by 1000 when c changes into d as Wd , the  number of distinguishable arrangements of d is 1000 more than the number of distinguishable arrangements of c,Wc.

In a reaction if the number of distinguishable arrangements increases the entropy also increases proportionally as if a object has more number of number of distinguishable arrangements then it rapidly and randomly keeps on changing its arrangements making it have more randomness or entropy.

So more is the change in number of arrangements , more will be the change in randomness and more will be the increase in entropy ( ).

So as change in the number of distinguishable arrangements in reaction c d ( that is 1000) is more than the change in the reaction a b ( that is 100),so the process c d has greater entropy change.
