Cognition and emotions can largely influence the way people perceive pain. Since you have asked only for cognitive factors I shall focus on them only.

Research evidence shows that when a person is involved in a cognitive task or is distracted, there is reduction in the perception of pain. Perception of pain can be controlled by distraction, educational intervention and verbal manipulation.

Perception of pain can also be reduced by a good locus of control. People having internal locus of control will engage in more coping strategies better than those who lack locus of control. Perceived control over the pain is also said to reduced perception of pain.

The belief of self-efficacy in oneself that the pain shall be reduced by using active coping strategies also helps to reduce perception of pain. The individual who is suffering must be confident and assured that their coping mechanism will help them to reduce the pain that they are experiencing.
