B. Colonizing host by binding to host tissues.

Pili are the thin rigid fibre made of protein that protrudes out from the cell surface . It's made of pilin protein which are oligomeric in nature . Bacteria usually attach with the help of pili to a surface in the start of their reproductive period . Pili are antigenic in nature . They are very fragile structures so they are replaced frequently which makes them differ in their antigenicity. They are of various types like conjugative pili , type IV pili etc. Pili are also responsible for the virulence character of bacteria like e coli, vibrio choleri, streptococcus . It depends on their holding capacity to the host cell the better they are attached to the cell surface the better will be their replicability and more the nutrition will be used. On many studies it has been found that when there are many strains of a single species , non pathogenic bacteria were devoid of pili and pathogenic ones were pili containing bacteria.
