Question - Write short notes applying models and concepts of diversity and culture to the organizational situation. (500 words)
Answer - Cultural diversity is when the
population gap is well represented within a community. If the group
represents a wide variety of groups then the group is diverse.
Organizational culture is not stable. Members of an organization
interact over time to develop a shared belief about "what looks
right" and learn what makes success and what doesn't. When those
beliefs and beliefs fall short of successful results, the culture
must develop the organization to remain relevant in the changing
environment. Thus, leaders have a duty to explain to their
employees about the benefits of change and to show through
collective experience with new behaviors that the new culture is
the best way to work to achieve success. In the current business
situation, due to globalization, there is more communication
between people of diverse cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds than
before. Today, people are not limited to live and work in a limited
market, instead, they join the competition coming from every
continent in the world economy. Therefore, companies need diversity
to become more imaginative and adapt to the changing environment.
To accept the challenge of diversity, managers must learn the
managerial skills required in a multicultural work environment. In
many cultures, the roles of men and women vary greatly - therefore,
in a business environment - expectations of one person's behavior
may not always agree with the cultural norms of another culture. In
some cultures, women are expected to take a subordinate position,
and in Western cultures, women cannot function independently.
Cultural diversity is seen as a competitive advantage, meaning that
a diverse workforce can contribute to a potential competitive
advantage for the organization. Researchers confirmed that the
performance of the organization spread more in heterogeneous
environments than in homogeneous environments. In creating a
heterogeneous organization, the main objective of increasing
cultural diversity is to control pluralism for single-culture and
ethics-relativity to ethnocentrism. An absolute definition not only
allows for a more rigorous study of organizational culture, but
also enhances our understanding of how it affects other
organizational outcomes such as productivity, employee engagement,
and commitment. One thing is undoubtedly known about culture: it is
constantly being created, altered, and scattered to ensure the
success of its parent organization. A strong culture is a common
denominator of the most successful companies. Everyone has a
top-notch consensus about cultural priorities, and those values are
focused not on individuals but on the organization and its goals.
Leaders in successful companies live their cultures every day and
employees go out of their way for their cultural identity as well
as future new hires. They are clear about their values and how
those values define their organizations and determine how
organizations operate. If the culture of an organization is going
to improve the overall performance of the organization, then the
culture should provide a strategic competitive advantage, and
beliefs and values should be widely shared and remain firmly
intact. A strong culture can bring benefits such as enhanced trust
and cooperation, less disagreement and more efficient decision
making. An organizational culture begins to emerge over time, which
is shaped by the leadership of the organization and perceived by
the actions and values that contributed to earlier successes. To
successfully manage cultural diversity, there is a need to create a
conducive environment for all groups. If people feel respected
regardless of their background, it will improve promises and
efficiency, improve work relationships, and staff and retention of
the best employees. Companies can increase business growth and
improve customer service by incorporating their diverse labor
force. This means language skills, cultural sensitivity, knowledge
of business networks.
