could the surge in depression be linked to the causes Boethius explores (namely, a fixation on "transitory goods" or the goods of fortune)? What reasons might you have for thinking so? And how might we call attention to this worry to a culture that seems to have no time for or interest in "sustained, rational reflection" about what is genuinely good and humanly fulfilling?

Answer #1

The US society is struggling hard to overcome the psychological struggles such as depression that arises from their love for materials and the goods of fortune such as, wealth, power and fame. America is a materialistic society which strives on pleasure and material life. This would mean people spend more than they save and they keep working in order to enjoy more materialistic pleasures which makes them dissatisfied, face relationship problems and family issues. Second type of people try to accumulate wealth and use that wealth to accumulate power in order to become famous in the society. It’s a cycle which makes people pursue one of the three and using which people pursue the other. Overcoming the materialistic mind-set and working towards personal reflection and inner journey because they always want to gain attention, appreciation and recognition from the society without worrying about making themselves better by traveling within themselves.
