Generally speaking , if a metal is dissolving in HCl, it forms metal chloride with the evolution of H2 gas. The equation is as follows.

Ni +2Hcl -->NiCl2 +H2

If Ni metal is dissolving to form nickel chloride, then you will be able to see effervescence and metal dissolve..

If the Ni is not reacting with HCl, then you can not see effervescence.
