  2. Evaluate the company’s plan to expand into the pet apparel market. Does this plan align with its mission statement? Please explain.

Scenario 2 - Organizing

A personal care product company that has traditionally targeted a mature segment of the population plans to create a line of personal care products that target a younger generation of men and women (18-25 years of age). Given this shift in strategy, the company now needs to organize resources to achieve goals set out in the plan.

They desire to partner with influential public figures (i.e. well known athletes, celebrities, etc.) to help promote the brand’s new image. The company has allotted $10M to pay for these strategic partnerships and the company’s mission is: “To help individuals enjoy a positive relationship with the way they look and to help individuals raise their self-esteem and realize their full potential”.

They are considering the following people to represent the new brand image:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Soccer, Portugal)
  • Emma Watson (Actor, France)
  • LeBron James (Basketball, United States)
  • Kim Kardashian (Reality Star, United States)
  • Lionel Messi (Soccer, Argentina)
  • Kevin Durant (Basketball, United States)
  • Rihanna (Singer, United States)
  • Justin Bieber (Singer, Canada)
  • Katy Perry (Singer, United States)
  • Bruno Mars (Singer, United States)

Questions:

Answer #1

Scenario 1- Planning function involves deciding on the goals and objectives of the business and formulating tasks and processes to achieve the goals. It involves defining the timeline, scheduling the tasks and activities , evaluating the costs and resources involved and required outcomes.

The role of company's mission statement is to reflect the organisational purpose and how it plans to serve its customers with its scope of services and products and the value to be delivered to the customers.

The company's plan to expand into pet apparel market is its strategy of diversification and innovative line of apparels for pets to provide an option to customers . The plan relates to the mission statement as many customers run with their pets and since the company's idea is in planning stage, it can reassess its mission statement once it is clear on the plan of introducing clothing and accessories line for pets.

Scenario 2 - Organising

The functioning of organising entails allocation of tasks, resources and responsibilities as per the plan and classify the tasks in different categories. The relationship to planning is that organising is done as per plan and the defined goals and objectives.

Given the company's mission statement the company should partner with Bruno Mars and Lionel Messi as both are icons and known for their liking for pets. They can serve the company's purpose of popularising their line of athletic apparel and introduction of the apparels and accessories line for pets.

The amount can be allocated between the two picks based on the sponsorship activities and promotion planned. Both have capacities of promoting the brand among their respective brands and the minimum appearance and commitment they can make based on their fee and willingness to join the cause. Since Bruno Mars will have more influence in terms of market size and availability for public events, he can be allocated more proportion of the amount.
